Ha Long Bay heritage – a natural masterpiece amid the skies and seas of Asia
Like an enormous ink-wash painting shaped by time and the patience of nature, Ha Long Bay has long been a sacred symbol of Vietnamese tourism. Here, between layers of white clouds and emerald waters, thousands of limestone karsts rise majestically, forming endless tiers of landscapes that feel both overwhelming and deeply serene.
Magnificent Beauty – A Source of Poetry and History
Since ancient times, Ha Long’s scenery has appeared in poetry as a testament to the boundless beauty of Vietnam’s natural world. In the early 19th century, poetess Hồ Xuân Hương, during her stop in Yên Quảng (now adjacent to Ha Long), composed five classical Chinese poems capturing her emotions toward the seascape. Her verses — “Shimmering on all sides, clouds veil the sky / Calm waters dotted with limestone shoots” — paint a vivid picture of the bay’s dreamlike, mystical charm.

Today, with an area of more than 1,553 km² and 1,969 islands and islets, Ha Long Bay remains as enigmatic as ever. Its limestone formations appear in countless shapes: Trống Mái Islet resembles a pair of stone roosters dancing on the waves, while Đỉnh Hương stands like a giant incense burner rising from the sea. Every island feels deliberately placed by nature, contributing to a masterpiece no other place on Earth can replicate.
A Unique Cave System – Geological Imprints of Millions of Years

Hidden within the limestone mountains lies another world: an intricate system of caves formed over millions of years. Thiên Cung Cave glitters like a stone palace; Sửng Sốt Cave opens into a vast, dramatic chamber; Đầu Gỗ Cave is entwined with ancestral legends. Together, they form a “living geological museum” in the heart of the bay.

Ha Long Bay also boasts one of Vietnam’s richest levels of biodiversity, home to nearly 3,000 species across mangroves, limestone vegetation, cave ecosystems, and coastal waters. This abundance creates a colossal “natural museum” that continues to fascinate global researchers seeking to decode the region’s evolutionary story.
In 1998, geologist Tony Waltham spent weeks surveying the area. In his report to UNESCO, he wrote: “The beautiful mountains rising from the still sea create a truly wonderful natural landscape. The scenic value of Ha Long Bay hardly needs further explanation.”
A Heritage Celebrated by the World
On December 17, 1994, UNESCO officially recognized Ha Long Bay as a World Natural Heritage Site for its outstanding universal aesthetic value. Six years later, on December 2, 2000, it received a second inscription for its geological and geomorphological significance — a powerful acknowledgement of its global uniqueness.
The recognition continued. In September 2023, the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago complex became Vietnam’s first inter-provincial World Natural Heritage Site, enhancing its natural, cultural, and biodiversity value while affirming its position on the global heritage map.
Quang Ninh Province is now preparing a dossier for Ha Long Bay’s third UNESCO inscription, based on Criterion X for biodiversity. If approved, Ha Long Bay will join the rare group of world heritage sites with three UNESCO recognitions.

An Enduring Icon of Natural – Cultural Harmony
Ha Long Bay captivates not only with its towering karsts, mystical caves, and vibrant ecosystems stretching from sea level to ancient limestone layers. Its lasting value lies in the gentle harmony of nature, history, and culture — a distinctive identity shaped over centuries. The bay continues to preserve its primordial charm, compelling every visitor to pause, gaze, and leave with an inexplicable sense of longing.
For this reason, Ha Long Bay consistently appears on lists of the world’s must-visit destinations — not just as a natural wonder, but as an irresistible invitation to those who love nature and seek a journey of discovery in its truest form.
If you are looking for a getaway from the rhythms of daily life, to hear the whispers of the sea echo between million-year-old cliffs, and to immerse yourself in untouched natural beauty, Ha Long Bay is always ready to welcome you.
Take a day trip or spend a night aboard a cruise to understand why UNESCO has honored Ha Long Bay three times — and why millions of international travelers continue to return.
